On Saturday, 7th September, 2019, Impact Driven Initiative for Sustainable Development (IDISD) free summer lesson came to an end with award and prize giving ceremony for students and volunteers. The Lesson which commenced on 5th August, 2019 engaged about one hundred (100) students from fifteen (15) different schools in Kwara state and one (1) school from Kebbi State.

The president of the BOT, Dr. Oladele Salaudeen Hanafi, ably represented by the Executive Director of IDISD, Mr. Olanrewaju Rabiu Hanafi delivered the opening remark. Dr. Hanafi explained that the organization decided to hold the free summer lesson in order to help the student in preparing for future exams and the future in general.
He said the programme did not only focus on academic development of the student but included sports and other important modern issues such as entrepreneurship, climate change and career guidance in order to ensure that the students do not lag behind in many areas when compared to students from developed countries.
The president continued his remark by appreciating the zeal of the volunteers in community development and their doggedness in teaching the students without expecting wage or salary. He said the transport allowance and volunteering certificates that IDISD would give them during the event were signs of appreciation which could never equate their selfless service and commitment to community development. The president extended the appreciation to other partners and sponsors such as Mr. Toba Adeyeye, Okutagidi Progressive Union, and many other community associations who contributed to the success of the programme.

Dr. Hanafi specially praised the students for their interest in developing themselves and their cooperation with the teachers in ensuring that the objectives of the programme were achieved. He explained that while many of their peers were in full holiday mood, they decided to use part of their time to improve themselves. He asked the students if there was anyone among them that had not gained anything from the programme and they all echoed, “No”
Some of the students who were willing to share their experience said the teachers taught them well and through this programme they got to know for the first time, matters such as climate change and entrepreneurship and the scrabble game which was introduced to the programme. They appreciated the career guidance session which was handled by Counsellor Isiaka Gafar, (a member of the BOT) and acknowledged that it opened their eyes on subject combinations necessary for them to achieve their future career.
End of Summer Lesson Ceremony

Dr. Hanafi also assured the students that the IDISD Summer Lesson programme had come to stay and they should look forward to it the next summer break. He said best students would be appreciated for their excellence and commitments with various prizes and awards.

After the end of the president’s speech, invited guests and volunteers were invited to give words of encouragement and advice to the students. To add spice to the event there was a debate competition between the male and female student representatives on the topic, “Peer influence is more beneficial”. At the end of the debate, the male debaters won with 44 points against 32 points for their female counterpart.  To showcase more talents the students were further invited to the stage to say riddles and jokes.
