2019 WORLD AIDS DAY SENSITIZATION PROGRAMME IN KWARA, NIGERIA
2019 WORLD AIDS DAY: SCHOOL COMMUNITIES EMPOWERED TO MAKE THE DIFFERENCE BY SPREADING HIV/AIDS KNOWLEDGE
“While HIV remains a major global public health issue, most people living with HIV lead long and healthy lives thanks to effective ways to manage the infection.
However, people, particularly younger generations should be aware and obtain skills to access HIV prevention, testing, treatment and care.” (https://www.who.int/campaigns/world-aids-day/2019)
World Aids Day (WAD) is celebrated every 1st
of December. The 2019 WAD with the theme, “communities make the difference” was
targeted at equipping communities in the mission of reducing the menace of
HIV/AIDS.
In Commemorating With the 2019 theme, IDISD organized a seminar
that enlightened forty five (45) teaching and non-teaching staff of Busari
Alao College and St. James Senior Secondary School, Ilorin, Kwara state on
latest development in HIV/AIDS research and how they can teach others what they
learnt. It was an interactive session that was all about training the trainers.
90% of the participants said they learnt new things from the programme and
would spread what they learnt from the programme. This statistics left us with
fulfilled mind that these teachers would went ahead to educate many others
(colleagues, spouses, students, children, friends, etc) on HIV/AIDS prevention,
contraction and treatments.
Specifically, the participants learnt some key terms in HIV/AIDS
such as viral load and ART; 2018 stats of the disease in the world and Nigeria;
means of transmission of HIV; ways HIV is not transmitted; survival of HIV
outside the body; testing for HIV; prevention of transmission of HIV; HIV
transmission from mother to child; other cares needed by HIV patients; ways
through which communities can make a difference, among others.
