IDISD BOOK PROJECT
CALL FOR CHAPTER CONTRIBUTION
Book Title: COVID-19 Pandemic Experience in Kwara
State: Lessons For the Future
INTRODUCTION
The COVID-19 pandemic is the
defining global health crisis of our time. The outbreak was identified in
Wuhan, China, in December 2019, declared to be a Public Health Emergency of International
Concern on 30th January, 2020 and recognized as a pandemic by the World Health Organization
on 11th March, 2020. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the current
global pandemic is the first known to emerge as the result of a novel
coronavirus. In a little over 3 months, COVID-19 has morphed from a small
outbreak to a pandemic, which the WHO deems a public health emergency of
international concern and a socioeconomic crisis affecting everyone.
Indeed, the virus traveled in
a borderless world, and challenged public and private health systems in more
than 196 countries. No doubt, the new novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has posed an
unprecedented challenge to governments worldwide. The first confirmed case of
COVID-19 in Nigeria was announced on 27th February, 2020 when an Italian citizen
in Lagos tested positive for the virus. In Kwara state, the first case was
recorded on 6th April, 2020.
As a highly contagious virus,
the number of new cases of COVID-19 discovered in Nigeria keeps skyrocketing on
a daily basis, causing both the federal and the state governments to implement different
strategies to stop the spread of the virus and limit the mortality rate
resulting from the disease. Furthermore, governments’ approaches to tackle the
pandemic and their effectiveness seem to significantly vary. Although we do not
know the answer yet and this may change in the future, such differences demand
deep reflections.
As the virus spread
worldwide, it poses additional challenges not just to the health sector, but
also to education, security and even the economy. The three months of COVID-19
have also indicated that governments react to issues with a variety of
responses in terms of degree of innovativeness and flexibility.
OBJECTIVES OF THE BOOK
On this note, IDISD is
issuing this call for chapters, asking for reflective contributions on what lessons
can be learnt from ongoing experience of the COVID-19 pandemic in Kwara State. Chapter
contributions are invited for an edited book that examines the issues,
perspectives, trends, impacts of COVID-19 pandemic in Kwara State and the
lessons for the future.
The call for chapter
contribution aims to gather reflexive, timely and relevant contributions of approaches
to COVID-19 pandemic by the public and private sector organisations in Kwara
State while providing solutions. We acknowledge that the timing of the call may
pose challenges to the rigor and relevance of academic contributions – as we
all are learning along the way. However, we believe that strategic management
approach should be employed to respond to this type of emergency more quickly
and offer more vigorous insights. This will no doubt position the State to make
projections about preparedness for future emergencies. We are convinced that
there is positivity to be derived by learning from such lessons. The chapter
would among other topics address questions about political and institutional
preparedness and the role of expertise, to supply chains and intersectoral
impacts, to testing, treatment, to employment, recessions, and economic downturns,
to agriculture industrial and service professions, to health, educational, and
well-being outcomes.
