TOP KWARAN ENTREPRENEUR TAUGHT ENTREPRENEURSHIP TO IDISD SUMMER LESSON STUDENTS
“Entrepreneurship is the cornerstone to African development and the key
to local value creation” –Tony Elumelu
If Nigeria will produce great entrepreneurs in future and
continue the trend of the present stride in improving Nigeria’s economy, we
need to start stepping down entrepreneurship development to young people in
secondary and primary schools. We need to diversify educational development
programmes to encouraging positive attitude and acquisition of skills, rather
than just focusing on academics only.
One of such ways that IDISD (Impact Driven Initiative for Sustainable Development) is innovating educational
development is by inviting professionals to impart skills into our summer
lesson students and introducing intellectual games into the programme.
It was a great Friday for our students when they got to meet
Mr. Toba Adeyeye, founder/CEO of Akot Prints (www.akotprints.com). Mr. Adeyeye is a
young kwaran entrepreneur that founded a printing and design company which now
employs more than twenty staff. His presentation was mixture of analysis,
practical examples and, questions and answers time.
Mr. Adeyeye counseled
the students that they had the capability to achieve whatever they wanted to
achieve in life, most especially owning a big company. All they needed to do
was to harness their skills, not being lazy and facing their studies. He cited
examples of how person like Saidat Fatima became a popular singer by harnessing
her innate skills. He explained that entrepreneurship has many benefits like
the opportunity to create good lives for others by employing them, being able
to decide your own life and making money in a legal way.
During the questions and answers section, Mr. Adeyeye had to
answer questions of how he started his entrepreneurship career and if he ever
dreamt of becoming an entrepreneur. Responding to the questions, explained that
he had been exhibiting entrepreneurial skills right from childhood where he
used to charge commission from customers for delivering drugs from his mom’s
shop to them. He explained that it was his decision to tap into that type of
opportunity which earned him the nickname of Doctor then, without his mom
knowing the secret behind the nickname. His present entrepreneurship journey,
as he explained to the students started during his university days. He said, “ It started from my university days. I studied computer science but I was doing
many hustling by buying and selling, doing computer related business services,
printing jobs, and so on. All I had to do was to convince my friends to
patronize me and so I began making money. Later on, I streamlined my activities
and focused mainly on printing.”
The entrepreneurship talk ended with giving of gifts to the
students who responded well to Mr. Adeyeye’s question and his promise to
support the programme in order to support the development of the young people.
